In the soaring summer heat
It’s airless even without my mask.
Sitting under the elephant tree
Waiting.
Watching.
Resting in the shade.
I thank the architect
From a century ago
For thinking of me.
Cooked earth cradles this oasis.
Naked tree roots hug the azure,
Ancient, diamond tiles of cobalt blue,
Calming.
Cooling.
Christening the shade.
And I thank the ceramicist
From a century ago
For thinking of me
A hot breeze trips on the water,
Ripples crisscross ripples.
A charismatic blue ink dance.
Tiles awash.
A cooling,
A moving,
Saving my head in the shade.
And I thank the gardener
From a century ago
For thinking of me
A lattice of diamonds glitters in chaos,
Shifting blue squares in this stifling heat.
A treat awaits you see
Under the elephant tree.
Making memories,
While
Watching,
Wondering.
So I thank those with foresight
From a long century ago,
For our urban icecream delight
