Carob tree throne
There's a lot of love out there. We watch the news and see all the bad, but there is also good. A short and lighter tale for this week, written while walking and in need of a reset..
I have a favourite seat under a carob tree and I was heading straight there. I walked along the high field edge, above an ancient stone wall. The hillside is all terraced, but these are gently rolling hills and so the terraces are plump and full of autumnal vines working up to their momentous day when they drop their leaves. To rest.
For winter.
To reset.
As they recycle into the dark, soft earth. And breathe.
For some reason I just stop walking and turn downhill towards the view. The land resembles an inside-out, hand knitted jersey, with its vine lines stretching into the distance, the view only broken by a still elegant, ancient sand-stone wall weaving its way round to the woods.
I breathe in. Fast and deep. I think of all the good, all the positive things people do, that nature does, and then breathe out very slowly, letting go of worry, my headache and the world that was pulling my shoulders down.
Again.
The sky isn’t blue. Clouds are skittering fast but the birds are singing all the same. Firecrests with their tiny pretty sounds sing in the trees.
My phone bleeps. Brace yourself for the storm it says.
Maybe best to make the most of being out here in the trees before everything goes wild again. I look to my seat of stone. A young guy has nicked my spot! He has three beautiful dogs of very different breeds jumping with lots of extra bounce, around his feet, impatient for more fun. He’s smoking a cigarette.
I can’t blame him for sitting there. Why should it be only me that knows that seat under the Carob tree is the best seat in town?
I deviate and walk to a café instead. It’s a few miles. I need the walk anyway. The fresh air. To feel the wind in my face. And I smile.
Job done.
Lots of love. And there is…
lots of love in this world too. The news hurts and takes over and continues to worry us, but there are a lot of beautiful people out there doing their bit to try and make this world a better place.

Thank you for reading. Family visit this week. Time to cook. See you next week.
(Edited for a tiny typo…I always have one!)
